Hey there, lovebirds! So, you're getting hitched in the awesome city of Austin? Congrats! Now comes the fun part (and sometimes a little overwhelming part) of planning all the details. One of the BIGGEST decisions you'll make is choosing the right photographer – the person who's going to capture all those tear-jerking, laughter-filled, dance-your-heart-out moments of your special day.

As an Austin wedding photographer who's been in the biz since 2014 and photographed over 200 weddings (yep, you heard that right!), I know a thing or two about what makes a great fit. My style is all about bright, colorful images that truly reflect the joy of your day, and I'm not afraid of a little (or a lot!) of low light magic when the sun goes down.

Choosing your photographer is a big deal, and you want to make sure your personalities click and that they can deliver exactly what you're dreaming of. That's why asking the right questions upfront is SO important. To help you navigate this, I've put together a list of essential questions to ask any Austin wedding photographer you're considering. Let's dive in!

Essential Questions to Ask Your Austin Wedding Photographer

Peeking at Their Style & What They've Got

  • "Can I see a full wedding gallery (or two)?" Trust me on this one! Highlight reels are great, but a full gallery will give you a much better idea of their consistency throughout an entire wedding day – from getting ready to the last dance.

  • "How would you describe your photography style?" For me, it's all about vibrant colors and capturing genuine emotions. What resonates with you? Make sure their answer aligns with your vision!

  • "Have you ever photographed at my venue before? If not, are you willing to check it out beforehand?" Being familiar with a venue like the Messina Inn in Wimberley or the ColoVista Mansion in Bastrop definitely helps a photographer know the best spots and lighting. But even if they haven't, a good photographer will be proactive in scouting!

  • "What's your experience with low-light or nighttime wedding photography?" Now, this is a big one, especially for those awesome Austin evenings! You want someone who knows how to rock the night shots and light things up beautifully. Some photographers call themselves "natural light photographers," which, let's be honest, can sometimes mean they're not as confident with flash. I believe in mastering all lighting situations to ensure your photos look amazing no matter the time of day. While direct flash is having a moment, a skilled photographer knows how to use light creatively for stunning results, and I'm always up for staying current!

  • "About how many weddings do you photograph each year?" This can give you an idea of their experience level and how much focus they can dedicate to your wedding.

Let's Talk Packages & Pricing (The Honest Stuff!)

  • "Can you walk me through your different wedding photography packages?" It's important to understand what's included in each.

  • "What's in your base package, and what are the options for add-ons?" My personal packages are proudly listed on my website, I like to be transparent and honest. To see my packages click here.

  • "How many hours of coverage are typically included?" The industry standard is 8 hours for a full wedding day, however, you can cover all the highlights within 6 hours. This is perfect if you are working with a specific budget.

  • "What's the cost if we need extra hours on the day?" Many photographers have an extra hours clause on their contracts. As for me, it is the same as an hourly rate, $300 for one photographer and $400 for two.

  • "Do any of your packages include an engagement session or bridal portraits?" (Heck yeah, mine often do! It's a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day).

  • "What's your payment schedule, and what payment methods do you accept?" This varies from photographer to photographer. Usually, there is an upfront retainer fee and the rest is due some time before the wedding day. It is industry standard to pay the photographer in full before the wedding. I charge a $500 retainer fee and the rest is due two weeks prior to my client's wedding.

  • "What happens if we need to cancel or postpone?" It's good to know the policy upfront.

  • "How many images can we expect to receive?" This is a HUGE one for me! You deserve to have ALL the beautiful moments captured. I deliver all the good images – no caps, no holding back! You'll get all the keepers, minus the blinks, blurs, and duplicates. Plus, you get the rights to download and print them wherever you like – no extra fees from me! I believe in being upfront and honest about what you're investing in.

  • "Do you offer hourly rates?" Yes, I do! For couples who have shorter events or are on a tighter budget, my hourly rate is $300 for one photographer and $400 for two. We can definitely chat about what works best for your needs.

The Nitty-Gritty (Logistics & Workflow)

  • "Will you be the main photographer shooting our wedding?" (Good to clarify!). And yes, I'll be there, and often my awesome sister will be my second shooter!

  • "Do you work with a second shooter?" (Speaking of my amazing sister!) Having a second photographer is a game-changer. It means we can capture different perspectives at the same time – like the bride walking down the aisle and the groom's emotional reaction. Plus, while I'm with the bride getting ready, my second shooter can be with the groom and groomsmen. During cocktail hour, while I'm doing family portraits, the second shooter can capture all those fun candid moments of your guests mingling!

  • "What kind of equipment do you use?" Professional gear is a must for quality images! I use sony cameras and lenses, I have tried Canon and they are fantastic too. I've had other second shooters who have used Nikon and those cameras are good too! (It's like having an iPhone or an Andriod, people will disagree but they both get the job done).

  • "Do you have backup equipment in case something goes wrong?" Accidents happen, and a pro will always be prepared.

  • "What's your backup plan if you can't make it to our wedding due to an emergency?" That's a really important question! Let me tell you, I am COMMITTED to being there for your special day. Back in 2016, during an engagement session, I actually broke my leg! Despite needing surgery and having six weddings lined up, I made sure every single one was covered by a talented friend, Nicole, and I was present at every single one. While I hope nothing like that ever happens again, you can rest assured that I have a network of trusted professional photographers I can call upon in a true emergency. However, my priority is always to be there for you personally – I wouldn't miss it!

  • "How long will it take to receive our final photos?" This depends. The industry standard is 6-8 weeks from the wedding day. And 2-3 weeks for sessions. This is also my turnaround time.

  • "How will we receive our photos (online gallery, USB, etc.)?" I have a lovely gallery system where my clients download all their images, I can, however, give you a physical USB copy upon request.

  • "Do we get the printing rights to our images?" (Yes, you do with me!) I really think that you shouldn't have to pay extra to be able to print your images. They are yours! Aways that's just me and there are some photographers who will charge you to download and to print images.

Getting to Know Them (Personality & Communication)

  • "Can we see some testimonials or reviews from your past clients?" Hearing from other couples is always helpful!

  • "How do you typically communicate with clients leading up to the wedding day?" I sit down with my couple on our first meeting, which already tells me so much information needed on their wedding day. I also reach out to them if they have an engagement session with me to provide them with an engagement session guide. A month prior to their wedding I send a wedding questionnaire. This extensive questionnaire allows me to get all the important information needed to successfully cover their wedding.

  • "Are you involved in helping us create our wedding day timeline?" (I'm happy to offer my experience and advice to make sure we have plenty of time for photos!) I actually create a photography timeline for all my couples during our first consultation

  • "Do you offer a consultation before we book?" Absolutely! I love chatting with couples to get to know them and their vision. Let's grab coffee (or hop on a Zoom meeting)!

  • "What's your approach to posing and capturing those natural, candid moments?" Well, I like to think of myself as your photography buddy who knows when to step in and when to let the magic happen on its own! I'll definitely give you guidance when you need it – think flattering poses that make you both look and feel amazing. But I also know that some of the best moments are the unplanned ones, so I'm like a ninja with a camera, capturing all those sweet, funny, and genuine interactions as they unfold naturally. Basically, you get the best of both worlds: gorgeous posed shots AND all those real, in-between moments that tell the true story of your day!"

  • "How do you usually handle family photos and group shots?" Having a plan in place makes this part go smoothly! Therefore, I provide my clients with an online questionnaire, that allows them to select the family and friend portraits they want to have taken on their wedding day. We print this information and we are ready to photograph what you wish. We usually photograph family and friends by the ceremony site unless the light is too harsh and not ideal for images.

Choosing your Austin wedding photographer is a big decision, but by asking these questions, you'll be well-equipped to find the perfect person (or team!) to capture your unique love story. Trust your gut, choose someone whose work you adore and whose personality clicks with yours.
